PoE Budget Planning For Access Switches
Port count and power budget are separate constraints. Most PoE shortfalls come from planning only the first.
Ports and Watts Are Different Limits
A 48 port PoE switch does not necessarily deliver full power on all 48 ports at once. The power supply defines a total watt budget which is shared. A switch can run out of watts long before it runs out of ports.
Estimate Real Draw Not Class Maximum
Devices negotiate what they need rather than drawing their class maximum continuously. Planning to class maximum overprovisions expensively. Planning to idle draw underprovisions dangerously. Use a realistic average with headroom for simultaneous peak.
Wi-Fi 6 Changed the Arithmetic
Modern access points routinely want more than the older 802.3af budget allowed. An access point in reduced power mode will quietly disable radio chains which shows up as coverage complaints rather than as a power alarm.
Redundant Supplies Are Not Additive by Default
In many platforms a second power supply provides redundancy rather than doubled budget unless the switch is explicitly configured for combined mode. Confirm which mode the design assumes.
Plan for the Next Three Years
Cameras access points and phones all trend upward in draw. A budget that is exactly sufficient today will fail the next refresh of any one device class.
